How Supplementation Affects Chronic Pain

By |June 13th, 2017|

You can eat a healthy diet and still have inflammation

When I was suffering from chronic pain and exhaustion with fibromyalgia chronic fatigue I didn’t see a link between diet and the symptoms I was suffering. I was eating a fantastic diet of live fresh natural foods, like green leafy salads and fresh pressed juice. I took pride in the quality of food I was eating.

My body began to shut down when there were too many painkillers (NSAIDS) in my system. A friend suggested I try taking a pharmaceutical grade supplement which contains a high level of antioxidants, along with other beneficial nutrients such as Omega 3. I gave it a try and was amazed by how much better I felt.

Chronic inflammation is what causes the biggest diseases

When the inflammation is not controlled, it turns into chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is one of the main ways degenerative diseases develop. Diseases that are common today: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, MS, fibromyalgia and more.  These diseases affect each person in different ways — however, chronic pain is a serious concern for many people.

Inflammation begins at the cellular level

Chronic pain is the result of inflammation, and it all begins at the cellular level.

Your cells are amazing — they are the essence of your body type, your health, and your energy. They have incredible power and potential to repair and rejuvenate themselves. This offers all of us hope that how we feel now is NOT how we have to feel tomorrow.

The health of your cells is most important

Supplementation is a powerful step in addressing the inflammation at the cellular level. However the nutrition must be able to enter the cell — this is very, very important! Without the right nutrients, your cell membranes are rigid and impermeable. With the correct nutrition and supplementation, your cell membranes will allow the healthy nutrients you are eating to enter and radically change your health.

Uncontrollable free radicals damage your cells

Even though I was eating healthy I didn’t understand why I felt so horrible. I studied everything I could on cellular nutrition and pain and I learned the link between inflammation, pain, and nutrition, including how important a personalized diet and supplementation plan was.

Your body is bombarded by free radicals from chemicals, pollution, stress, junk food . . . life in general. These free radicals damage the cell, leading to inflammation and free radical damage. Inflammation is caused by free radical damage — similar to your car rusting more and more over time.

Antioxidants have a natural anti-inflammatory action

Supplementing with a high quality multi-vitamin containing plenty of antioxidants that has the ability to enter the cell is the solution to repairing and healing your cells. Antioxidants have a natural anti-inflammatory action and when they enter the cell they get to work repairing the damage that the free radicals have done. And the best part? There are no dangerous side effects!

Antioxidants can eliminate the symptoms altogether, or greatly reduce the symptoms, allowing you to be pain-free for the first time in a long time. I was surprised that my pain completely vanished after increasing my antioxidant intake — mostly because I had tried tons of pain medication at the maximum dosage and still had pain.

How to increase your antioxidant intake

Supplementing with the proper antioxidants plays an important role in the anti-inflammatory function. They have the ability to eliminate or greatly reduce chronic pain.

Your cells will be protected from further damage and repaired and rejuvenated. You will feel better than ever. I know that I feel healthier and more energetic than I did 20 years ago.

The vitamin world can be overwhelming since there is so much conflicting and confusing information out there. I can make it crystal clear for you since I’ve been studying nutrition and cellular health for over 20 years now.

You are unique and your healing is serious business. You do not want to offer up your health to the cheapest bidder; you really do get what you pay for. Choosing the winning combination of the best quality product and the correct supplement prescription is the secret to a successful recovery.

You are unique and your body’s needs are unique. I can help you get the proper product and the proper amount at the proper times to ensure healing and rejuvenation as well as a healthy immune system.

Inflammation: The Fire That Rages Inside

By |June 6th, 2017|

A big buzz word in health is “inflammation.” Have you heard or seen this word used lately? The word itself means fire, with the the Latin roots meaning “set afire.” So why does a word that means fire matter to you and your chronic pain? Let me tell you by sharing my story:

Inflammation once destroyed my body

Years ago I felt like I had been hit in the back with a basketball. I ached everywhere and found sitting and standing quite painful. Every day I had a headache — some days it was more of a migraine that kept me in bed. My allergies kept me indoors and addicted to nasal spray. Needless to say, I was a big mess and felt like an 80 year old woman! Just thinking about how I felt left me depressed, overwhelmed, and sick of being in constant pain and searching for a solution. I was finally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the only relief was various strengths of pain killers. One night I slept on the bathroom floor because I was so sick from all of the painkillers. My body was letting me know that it could not tolerate the overuse of painkillers anymore. It was time to find another way.

I discovered that making a few key changes to my diet and beginning a nutritional supplement protocol made a huge difference. I turned a corner and kicked my chronic pain to the curb!

Inflammation is the root of chronic pain

Chronic pain impacts about 100 million US adults, and 1.5 billion people worldwide. It is at epidemic proportions. If you suffer from chronic pain in your body, then you are familiar with the symptoms of inflammation. These are some symptoms that you might have:

– Joint stiffness or muscle pain
– Swollen joints (knees, shoulders, hips)
– Irritable bowel syndrome
– Redness that is warm to the touch
– Feeling like you are hungover — achy and lethargic
– Feeling of constant discomfort

The causes of inflammation are unique to your lifestyle

The food your eat (certain foods are very inflammatory while others are anti-inflammatory), lack of exercise or too much exercise, stress, fatigue, viruses, or infections can trigger a raging inferno of inflammation deep in your system. This leads to aching, stiff and swollen knees, hips, feet, any joint or tissue can be affected — leading to limited mobility, pain, and stiffness.

You might have an overactive immune system

Inflammation is part of the body’s natural defence system. It’s your body’s natural way to self-protect because it is out of control. When your immune system is overworking, your body suffers. Most of the reason your body is overworking is because of your stress, nutrition, and sleep habits. Inflammation is at the root of most of today’s diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and more!

Inflammation can lead to autoimmune conditions

Inflammation can become a chronic, smouldering condition which turns dangerous when the the immune system fails. When inflammation builds up and causes your body’s immune system to work so hard that it fails, an autoimmune condition is born.

Autoimmune disorder is the result of today’s degenerative diseases that cause chronic pain, such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and more.

Inflammation can easily be fixed

In order to heal the inflammation, the internal fire must be put out. This can be done by making simple changes in your diet and lifestyle. Eliminating certain foods and increasing certain nutrients is most important. You are unique and so is how your body responds to food. A lot of my clients were once able to eat everything without feeling a negative response, but now their bodies respond differently (with joint stiffness, swelling, and more).

There are some general guidelines around food elimination that will be helpful for you to start. Download the 7 day food elimination guideline handout here. Once you complete these guidelines, you will need to move forward with a customized plan made uniquely for your body.

There are foods that will surprise you that very commonly trigger inflammation. Eliminating them from your diet can make a huge difference to your chronic pain.

Supplements will help

Supplementing with high quality pharmaceutical grade supplements is another critical key to regulating your immune system and the related pain. The proper supplements ensure your cells receive the appropriate combination of nutrients and antioxidants it needs to prevent and repair cellular damage. This will reduce inflammation and chronic pain.

A lot of my clients wonder why I suggest supplements and not just better nutrition. The short and easy answer is that we will never be able to consistently eat enough of the right nutrients in the amount that we need. And more importantly, the way our food is grown and cultivated has changed. Food is now grown with huge amounts of chemicals and pesticides which affect the nutrients in the food.

How Ada healed her chronic pain caused by inflammation

Ada was suffering from chronic pain throughout her entire body. Her body was showing signs of inflammation: arthritis, joint swelling, constant achiness, and headaches. The quality of her life was compromised due to limited and painful mobility, headaches, and fatigue.

Working with Ada’s lifestyle and health history, I determined that most of her inflammation was a result of her nutrition. We worked together to create a customized nutrition plan to help her eliminate certain foods I believed were triggering her inflammation and driving her painful condition.

I also designed a customized supplement program to address her specific needs that would help put out her internal fire and reduce her inflammation, and allowing her system to calm down and for healing to occur naturally.

In ONLY one week Ada noticed she had more energy and she was in much less pain. Within a month she was completely pain free and in much better spirits! She now enjoys her life! We continued to fine tune her program and she remains pain free to this day.

I wonder how incredible you could feel in one week — in one month? It could all start with following my easy guidelines to eliminate trigger foods for your inflammation.

How You Can Eliminate Your Chronic Pain Naturally

By |April 28th, 2017|

My Story

In 2002 I was living in a state of constant pain. Every morning I woke up with a crippling migraine, feeling like I had been hit with a truck. Even though I wore a back brace every day, my back ached constantly. I wore a brace for my hips and a splint for my thumb — it was a physical representation for what I felt internally.

I was falling apart internally.

Despite my efforts to relieve my pain, every night I went to bed knowing it was going to be the same story the next day. I made appointments for every type of professional a friend would recommend: chiropractor, acupuncturist, osteopath, naturopath, and the list goes on.

One afternoon I was in my family practice doctor’s office and he recommended I look for for other ways I could find relief. I was overwhelmed with so many different emotions that afternoon.

I started attending a meditation group and it was in this group that I discovered the power of working with my breath, I found steady, slow, sustained breathing settled my mind and my body and kept me from thinking about the future. Mindful breathing is now an important part of my daily practice. It is so easy to incorporate into your life! I share specific ways below.

How the body uses breathwork for healing

Science tells us that taking deeper and slower breaths helps relax our body and calm our mind. Our nervous system (brain, nerves, and anxiety) is split into two systems: parasympathetic and sympathetic.

Chronic pain keeps our body in the constant stress of fight or flight, the parasympathetic system. Deep breathing calms your hormones that promote the adrenal and fear responses that our body naturally produces.

As we practice deeper breathing, increased amounts of oxygen are delivered throughout our body and into our brain. This oxygen helps improve mental clarity and helps cleanse the blood to allow greater nutrients be delivered to the muscles and organs.

The breath brings oxygen and energy to every cell and tissue your body. It fuels your body and supports good physical and emotional health and healing.

Slow breathing is one of the best breathing techniques for pain and anxiety as it helps slow your heart rate, and naturally calms all of the systems involved in your body’s nervous response, which may aggravate pain and anxiety.

Breathwork can be done as a formal practice or can also be used effectively as you are going about your day. I love doing it while I am on a walk, or informally anytime throughout the day, even while falling asleep or just waking up. Whenever you choose to do it you will find that it will calm you, and relieve any tension or unwelcome physical sensations you may be may be experiencing.

Maya’s story

Maya came to me experiencing chronic pain in her neck and back and she suffered from headaches relating to this. In our first session we focussed on breathing slowly, gently and deeply for a few minutes.

Maya’s body, mind, and nervous system calmed and quieted. She was able to take a nice deep breath and relax even further as she noticed she felt relaxed and her pain was greatly diminished. All of this from just a few minutes of focussed breathing! This breathing technique became one part of Maya’s daily practice, and as she continued to balance and heal her body and mind she found her chronic pain and headaches greatly diminished.  Breathwork is essential to my holistic health and qigong practice, and I use it successfully with every client.

When we don’t use breathwork to heal chronic pain

When you experience pain you may notice that your breathing becomes quick, short and shallow — this leads to poor oxygen intake, more physical tension throughout your body and of course increased pain.

When we are experiencing pain we tend to breathe shallowly, or even hold our breath, which exacerbates the situation and can lead to more pain and related anxiety.

Breathing exercises are an excellent, quick, and easy solution for relieving pain, stress and anxiety. At rest, we breathe about 18 times per minute; that means your lungs contain stale stagnant energy.  This method of breathing is shallow, using only 60 percent of lung capacity, leading to a lack of oxygen and energy.

Breathing slowly and easily through your nose at a rate of about 10 breaths per minute has many health benefits. You bring in fresh oxygen and renewed energy to every cell and tissue in your body.

Breathwork can be done as a formal practice, or it can be used effectively as you are going about your day. I love doing it while I am on a walk, or informally anytime throughout the day, even while falling asleep or just waking up. Whenever you choose to do it, you will find that it will calm you and relieve any tension or unwelcome physical sensations you may be may be experiencing.

Here is a simple technique for you to use:

Take 3 gentle deep breaths down into your belly.

Now just relax into the natural rhythm of your breath.

Focus on moving it easily, slowly, and naturally this way for ten to fifteen minutes. The aim is to slow your breath down to 10 breaths or so a minute, remaining comfortable at all times.

Breathing in this way is a very beneficial practice, and is in fact a popular and well respected method of meditation. Incorporating this practice into your life regularly leads to the same benefits as you would experience as if you were meditating in a traditional manner.

Balancing the Energy of Spring

Balancing the Energy of Spring

9fde3c2e81e467b13f3648e1_640_garden-pathI love spring and the past few days I have felt the energy of spring bubble up inside me. The cherry blossoms and daffodils are here as is the beautiful light of the new season.

In spring we are shifting from the inner contemplative yin energy of winter to the more vibrant active yang energy of summer. It is a time to plant seeds, for rebirth and to celebrate the new life that  is emerging all around us.  There is change occurring within you as well. Take time to sit in stillness and focus on your breath as you observe the shifts within yourself.

It is important to maintain balance through the changing of the energy of the seasons. The liver energy is very active in the spring and needs to be supported to be able to detoxify the body.

Show your liver some love. Green is the colour of spring.

Eat green, get outside in the green and move your body doing qigong gentle exercises, walking and smiling are perfect ways to maintain balance.

Allergies and other respiratory ailments are a sign that your liver is out of balance. You know what to do!
